It's so easy to become blasé about records these days, especially if
they contain bossa nova. There just aren't enough surprises around.

That's why it's such a thrill to come upon a fine CD totally by chance.

While browsing at Rasputin's, my eye fell on jazz violist Jim Nolet's
latest release, a collaboration with a group of paulista vocalists
and instrumentalists. Topping the guest list was Mônica Salmaso's
name. The track list began with a great favorite, "É Preciso
Perdoar." How could I not take a chance?

I did, but you don't have to, because it's a beautiful album, and you
can download audio samples first.

Nolet's viola underpins the production with a rich sonority that
sometimes recalls Stephane Grappelli. His chief partner in this
effort is Rodrigo Rodrigues, who co-produced, plays violão,
harmonica, pandeiro, and ganza, and sings like a hybrid of Caetano
Veloso and Chet Baker. Rodrigues' English in "You Don't Know What
Love Is" and "Let's Get Lost" is impeccable.
